Here’s a few Tips and Tricks for Rub Rail Care
No matter how careful you are, the rub rail on your boat will often take some abuse. That’s OK! That’s the reason you have the rail in the first place. When the rail does get dirty, a little soapy water and elbow grease is usually all you need to get the rub rail squeaky clean again.
Tougher stains and scuffs typically happen if the boat is allowed to sit loosely on the windward side of a dock or when you make a particularly hard bounce off structure (don’t worry – we won’t tell!).
So what do you do when these black streaks and minor scuffs just won’t come out easily? Dirt has now become engrained into the rub rail so topical cleaners like Brite Wash or Serious Marine Cleaner will not do the trick. This is a perfect opportunity to use a variable grit rubbing compound like Shurhold’s Buff Magic. This product should work for both rubber and metal rub rails.
What you will need:
How to do it:
- Apply a small amount (about the size of a quarter) of Buff Magic to a section of the microfiber towel.
- Simply work it firmly in tight, quick circles over the effected area. Be patient and use more product as needed.
- Remember, the deeper the stain or scuff the longer this may take. Continue this process until you are satisfied with the result.
- Wipe up any excess compound and rinse with fresh water.
- Follow up by resealing your effected area with Pro-Polish, which will help protect the rail from future scuffing and UV rays.
